Project: Exploring Identity and Storytelling through portrait painting w/ Ceirra Evans
Description: Explore the captivating stories of individuals featured in the Brilliant Exiles exhibition through the transformative art of portrait painting. This workshop invites participants to delve into themes of identity, displacement, and resilience, as seen through the lens of the exhibition’s extraordinary narratives. Guided by artist Ceirra Evans, participants will learn the fundamentals of acrylic portrait painting, from sketching and composition to mastering color blending and texture techniques. Drawing inspiration from the exhibition, participants will create a personal and expressive portrait that captures the essence of character, emotion, and story. Participants may choose to paint a self-portrait or a portrait of an important person in their life. No prior painting experience is necessary—this workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels, offering guidance and encouragement throughout the creative process. All materials are provided. Be sure to bring a photo to use as a reference for painting.
Artist Bio: Ceirra Evans is a Kentucky (US) based painter depicting Appalachia and rural narratives. Ceirra’s work has been reviewed by Hyperallergic, The New Yorker and other publications. Her work has been exhibited in 21c Museums in Louisville, Kentucky and Bentonville, Arkansas. In 2023, Ceirra had a solo show “Come Home With Me” at Virginia Tech’s Perspective Gallery (Blacksburg, VA) and a solo show “A Wild Weed” at Gallerie Geraldine Banier (Paris, France). Her recent work is a part of the group exhibition “Notations on Ritual” at The Carnegie in Covington, KY. Ceirra has a degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies from Spalding University (Louisville, KY). She currently lives and works in Louisville, KY.
